Natural Stone FAQ’s
Q: How do I know how much aggregate I need for my driveway or garden?
A: It is common practise to lay aggregates at twice the depth of the size of aggregate. So a 20mm aggregate should be layed 40mm deep. Our aggregates are supplied in bulk bags weighing 850kg, one bag will cover 1.3 square metres at a 40mm depth. Contact us if you require any further assistance with calculating the volume of stone you need.
Q: Will I need to wash my aggregates?
A: All aggregates generate dust and dirt during the quarrying process but are washed before they are packaged into bulk bags, so most will not require any extra cleaning. Although Cotswold stone, Slate and Granite continue to generate dust after being bagged, due to individual stones rubbing against each other whilst the material is stored and transported. These may need to be sprayed with a hose during and/or after being layed.
Q: How do I know whether an aggregate is suitable for ponds and driveways?
A: All the product item descriptions of our aggregates should say whether the material is suitable for aquatics and driveways. If you require any more assistance with this please contact us.
Q: Where does your stone come from?
A: Approximately 65% of our products are quarried and manufactured in the British Isles. The other 35% are imported from across the globe. Some of our sandstone materials originate from India, marble and limestone from countries within the EU.
Q: How will my garden stone age and weather?
A: All natural stone ages to different degrees. As time passes and materials are exposed to the elements colours can fade and change, materials will have a more ‘weathered’ appearance. Moss may appear on natural stone which is in a consistently damp location. These changes can enhance the beauty of natural stone but if you wish to maintain the fresh appearance of your material you can by regularly jet washing it.
Q: What is the difference between hand cast stone and natural stone?
A: Natural stone is quarried from the earth then processed and manufactured. Hand cast stone is a concrete based, reconstituted material. A majority of our materials are natural stone and when we do offer hand cast alternatives they are clearly labelled as such. Our hand cast products are manufactured to the highest standard to produce highly attractive, long lasting materials.
Q: Is it possible to have a feature piece engraved for use as a memorial?
A: It is possible to have one of our natural stone features engraved for use as a memorial. The cost of this will depend on the nature of the material and the ammount of detail in design and level of workmanship required for the carving. It is not possible to engrave onto reconstituted products.
